WebRTC Weekend Reads: 3 for the Road

April 6, 2013

Three more posts you should read if you are interested in WebRTC.

Frankly? I wasn’t planning on doing a post listing this week’s crop of WebRTC posts – I wanted to reserve this week for the Nexus book.

Problem is – the moment I posted it, there came two posts I just couldn’t resist, with an additional post from earlier this week that struck a cord for me.

So here they are – enjoy them during your weekend (mine is almost over):

  • Interoperability is a sacred word in VoIP. I know – I’ve used it more than once in my past life. But is it still the case? Dean Bubley doesn’t think so, and I must say that I agree with him: Interoperability isn’t that important – at least not for the most part. You might have noticed how successful services tend to lock themselves up behind a closed garden – even those who use standards – why then is interoperability so important?
  • Chris Koehncke (who should probably be added to my magnificent seven), has another great post – he takes a jab at different dialing options we now have – and guess what? They include more than just numbers. While at it, he actually opened up his own, private, telephony service. I don’t know if he is hosting his website on GoDaddy, but he does suggest that our next telephony service can come from GoDaddy – or any other hosting company for that matter.
  • Todd Carothers is someone who got into my radar recently. He wrote some interesting posts about WebRTC, but the one that I want to direct your attention to is actually not about WebRTC and all about VoIP on smartphones – Apple is a service provider – I’d argue that now that the focus shifts from the network to the devices, it is the smartphone and OS vendors that are becoming the service providers. Do they care about WebRTC? Does it affect them in any way? I might try and touch these points in the future – for now – thumbs up for Todd for a great post.

Last, is my guest post this week on WebRTC World – this one is about the ads placement issue with video calling.

Sorry for the load of posts this week… next week will be similar though a bit lighter.
