AV2 stands for AOMedia Video 2.

AV2 is the successor of AV1, both are video codecs developed and specified by the Alliance for Open Media.

As a codec, AV2 is planned to be better than AV1 in compression performance. It takes the same approach as AV1 in terms of the main focus points it is designed upon:

  • Enhanced support for AR/VR applications
  • Split-screen delivery of multiple programs
  • Improved handling of screen content
  • Ability to operate over a wider visual quality range

Live AV1, AV2 will be royalty free. It is set to be launched by the end of 2025 as a standard specification. Adoption of it will take a few more years.

With relation to WebRTC, there is no current official plan to support AV2, but that will likely change once codec implementations of AV2 that support real time encoding and decoding will appear.
