FPS stands for Frames Per Second.

It denotes the number of video frames that are either sent or received per second.

Generally speaking, there are 4 large FPS categories used in video conferencing technologies such as WebRTC:

FPSUses
1-5Mostly reserved for screen sharing
15Used to lower bitrate over the network in large group calls. Mainly for participants who “participate” less (audio muted or speak less)
30Most video calls use 30 fps
60Mainly used for cloud gaming

It should be noted that FPS can fluctuate during a session based on the network conditions (available bitrate), video content being encoded, meeting dynamics, etc.

We usually refer to FPS also as frame rate.
