FPS stands for Frames Per Second.
It denotes the number of video frames that are either sent or received per second.
Generally speaking, there are 4 large FPS categories used in video conferencing technologies such as WebRTC:
FPS | Uses |
---|---|
1-5 | Mostly reserved for screen sharing |
15 | Used to lower bitrate over the network in large group calls. Mainly for participants who “participate” less (audio muted or speak less) |
30 | Most video calls use 30 fps |
60 | Mainly used for cloud gaming |
It should be noted that FPS can fluctuate during a session based on the network conditions (available bitrate), video content being encoded, meeting dynamics, etc.
We usually refer to FPS also as frame rate.
