The future of the carriers may not lie in services at all. Google Fi and IOT show a different future - one where services must run agnostic to carriers altogether.
We aren't always connected. What happens then when we try to use messaging services when we are offline? Should we rethink our architectures to fit to this use case?

The Smart prefix placed on Internet of Things devices? Nothing smart about it. Too many times it just means a dumb device with a good external programmable interface.
